Wherever you are jetting off to this summer make sure you take a good fitness routine with you.
It’s summer! It’s the season of sun, sand, and exploring. But whether you have your heart set on a city break, a campsite, or two solid weeks on a sun lounger, it’s important to try and stay fit and healthy while you are away from home. Now, I am not suggesting that you suddenly take to getting up at 5 am and putting in two hours at the hotel gym before you hit breakfast. R and R is definitely an important part of getting away from it all. But by maintaining some solid healthy habits wherever your summer adventures take you, it will be much easier to slide back into your workout routine when you get home. Not to mention you will feel happier, healthier and more energised while you travel.
These are my top tips for staying fit while you are away.
Bring a Compact Workout Kit
I’m not suggesting you fill your suitcase with kettlebells – the airline would probably have something to say about that! But lightweight equipment like a resistance band and jump rope can help you get in a great workout almost anywhere.
Make Activity Part of Your Adventure
Hiking, exploring a new city, taking an early morning run along the beach – these are all great ways to add a little more movement into your day, raise your heart rate, and help to keep you fit and healthy when you travel. Have you ever noticed how you start to feel sluggish when you are sedentary for a long period of time? That’s your body telling you that you need to get moving. Try and incorporate at least 30 minutes of heart rate raising activity into every day.
Hit the Water
For many of us, a great holiday is about having access to a pool or the ocean. Take advantage of this luxury and try to swim as much as you can while you are away – paying attention to safe times and areas to swim if you are taking a dip in the sea. A good idea is to grab your swim time as early as possible in the pool – before it gets too busy or hot to enjoy.
Choose Bodyweight Exercise
I’ve said it before and I will probably say it many times again, bodyweight exercises are awesome. You can do them in the smallest of hotel rooms, you need no equipment at all, and they can be incredibly effective in a short amount of time. Practice doing key functional movements like planks, squats, and lunges to perfect your form before trying more complex movements.
Eat Well (and Stay Hydrated)
A new place means a chance to try a new cuisine and you should absolutely indulge your adventurous eating side while you are on holiday. Look for options that are high in protein and veggies to provide your body with the fuel you need. And while indulging in the odd cocktail or two is no bad thing, you should balance this with plenty of water.
